A reissue of the classic TS 502 transistor radio designed by Marco Zanuso and Richard Sapper in 1963, the Brionvega Radio Cubo 50 updates a design so iconic that it was part of David Bowie’s personal sound system. Named for its simple, open-and-shut, split-cube shape this update of the original design incorporates a digital screen, FM radio and Bluetooth speaker as well as an alarm clock, the Radio Cubo now runs on both a standard plug-in electrical cord and a rechargeable battery with up to 6 hours of power life.

The result of Zanuso and Sapper’s extensive design research for furniture and accessory shapes that will retain a fresh, modern look over time, the Brionvega Radio Cubo 50 continues to look exciting and new over 50 years later. Like the original 1963 model, the Radio Cubo 50° is made from the high-quality zinc alloy zamak (zinc, aluminum, magnesium and copper), that does not generate air dispersion of  pollutants or toxic residues during its processing and is completely recyclable. This version of the Radio Cubo was produced to celebrate more than 50 years of the design. The original Radio (model TS 502) is an object in MoMA’s collection.

Why We Chose This
A true icon of industrial design and an object in MoMA’s collection, the Radio Cubo combines ease of use with durability and a sleek, futuristic look. The original version was released in 1964 and since then, more than eight versions with updated technology have been released. All are sought after by fans of Italian design objects. The Radio Cubo has been featured in two MoMA exhibitions, Making Music Modern: Design for Ear and Eye (2014–16) and From the Collection: 1960–1969 (2016–17).
