Sought after by retro design enthusiasts, the Lava Lamp premiered in the U.S. in 1965. Evoking an era defined by all things “groovy,” this mesmerizing motion lamp is made of glass features molten wax floating in liquid over an aluminum base, and has been a vintage favorite, from living rooms to dorm rooms, for decades. Over the years, the Lava Lamp evolved, offering different colors of lava, but the classic silver-colored base has remained. This lamp’s soft, soothing light helps you create a relaxing atmosphere and is an excellent conversation piece for your desk, dorm room or beach house, the Classic Lava Lamp measures 14.5h x 2'' diam., comes with a 15 watt bulb, and plugs into a standard power outlet.

After plugging in the Classic Lava Lamp, it will take approximately two to six hours for the lava to flow. It is recommended to only run the lamp for eight to ten hours at a time. (Do not run it 24/7 continuously.) It should be placed away from sunlight and extreme heat (no more than 60°F). Please note that the lamp becomes hot to the touch when in use. Please use care when handling the lamp as the glass compenent is not attached to the aluminum base. Keep out of reach from young children.

Why We Chose This
We chose this design because we feel it plays a role in defining a pop culture moment in the 1960s and '70s. The Lava Lamp began its life in 1963 as a motion lamp designed by English engineer Edward Craven Walker, who marketed it under the name Astro Lamp. In 1965, two American entrepreneurs bought the rights to market the lamp worldwide and formed the Lava Corporation in Chicago. The Astro Lamp was renamed the Lava Lamp and an American icon was born.
