MoMA Exclusive: Designed to lighten the mood during those daily “contrattempo” (Italian for “setbacks”), this clock features a large red disc that swings perpetually as it creates the illusion that it’s suspended. The shapes and bold colors of both the disc and hands are the influence of Memphis Design Group founder Ettore Sottsass, whom the Contrattempo Clock’s designers, Raul Barbieri and Giorgio Marianelli, worked for. The Contrattempo Wall Clock is made from 100% recycled materials (excluding its quartz movement): ABS plastic and aluminum. It measures 2.25h x 17.75"diam. Requires one LR6 1.5V battery (included).

Why We Chose This
An iconic design from 1987, the Contrattempo Clock was conceived by Raul Barbieri and Giorgio Marianelli. Both designers studied architecture at Politecnico di Milano prior to meeting in 1974 while working for Ettore Sottsass at the Olivetti Industrial Design Department. They went on to form a business together, the Barbieri e Marianelli Architetti Studio, where they created designs characterized by a mix of playfulness and functionality.
