A legend reborn: This iconic Eames® Molded Side Chair is now made from 100% post-industrial recycled plastic. Charles and Ray Eames adapted molding techniques developed during World War II to produce their classic molded plastic shell chair's simple, gracious form. After their debut at the MoMA’s Low-Cost Furniture Design competition in 1948, the Eames Shell Chairs were launched in 1950. They were among the first plastic chairs designed by the Eameses to be mass-produced. The current models are an exact reproduction of the originals, with a clean, simple form that is sculpted to fit any body. The Eames Molded Recycled Plastic Armchair’s shell sits atop a base of wire-enforced or wooden dowel legs. This simple, gracious design makes a stylish statement anywhere in your home. The Eameses and the manufacturer Herman Miller® are represented in MoMA’s collection.

Charles and Ray Eames
Charles and Ray Eames

Charles (1907–1978) and Ray (1912–1988) Eames were two of the most influential designers of the 20th century. In 1941, this husband-and-wife team founded their Los Angeles-based design practice, the Eames Office, and in the same year an important design by Charles Eames and Eero Saarinen, the Organic Chair, was exhibited at a MoMA exhibition celebrating the winning entries of its Organic Design in Home Furnishings competition. Eames designs have been featured in dozens of MoMA exhibitions, including New Furniture Designs by Charles Eames (1946), Prize Designs for Modern Furniture (1950), Plywood: Material, Process, Form (2011–2013) and The Value of Good Design (2019).
