The Eameses developed their Dot Pattern in 1947 but opted not to submit it to MoMA’s Competition for Printed Fabrics. It did not go into production during their lifetime, but later became their most popular textile design when it was revived in 1999.

The pattern recalls musical notes but also a resemblance to Eames’ famous chairs with tubular frames and rounded seat and backs.

The Museum has been exhibiting work by Charles and Ray Eames since 1941, beginning with Organic Design in Home Furnishings. Other exhibitions included New Furniture Designed by Charles Eames (1946) and Good Design (1950–51).

Charles (1907–1978) and Ray (1912–1988) Eames were two of the most influential designers of the 20th century. In 1941, this husband-and-wife team founded their Los Angeles-based design practice, the Eames Office, and in the same year an important design by Charles Eames and Eero Saarinen, the Organic Chair, was exhibited at a MoMA exhibition celebrating the winning entries of its Organic Design in Home Furnishings competition. Eames designs have been featured in dozens of MoMA exhibitions, including New Furniture Designs by Charles Eames (1946), Prize Designs for Modern Furniture (1950), Plywood: Material, Process, Form (2011–2013) and The Value of Good Design (2019).
