Designed in 1953 by Charles and Ray Eames, the Eames® Hang-It-All Coat Rack is made using the same wire welding techniques that the Eameses developed for manufacturing their wire chair and table bases. The design is childlike in its use of color, and boldly sophisticated in its reinterpretation of the simple coat rack. Made by Herman Miller® of painted steel-wire rods capped with eight large and six small painted maple wood balls. Hanging hardware is included. Not intended as a toy. The Eames® Hang-It-All Coat Rack measures 14.5h x 19.5w x 6.5"d; the large balls measure 2"d each and the small balls measure 1.5"d each.

The colorful version of the Eames Hang-It-All is the original design; we also offer other color and wood options that were developed by Herman Miller®. We also offer a new version of the Hang-It-All, but a blue frame and red balls. This version is based on original drawings by Ray Eames.

The Eames® Hang-It-All Coat Rack is an object in MoMA's collection. It has been featured in MoMA's 2012 exhibition Century of the Child: Growing by Design, 1900-2000, an overview of the modernist preoccupation with children and childhood as a paradigm for progressive design thinking. The exhibition brought together school architecture, clothing, playgrounds, toys and games, children's hospitals and safety equipment, nurseries, furniture, and books to examine individual and collective visions for the material world of children.

Why We Chose This
Recognized as the primary designer of the Hang-It-All Coat Rack, Ray Eames was fond of saying, "I never gave up on painting, I just changed my palette." An abstract painter in the 1930s, Ray applied her playful sense of color when conceiving the Hang-It-All in the early 1950s. Devised as a work of "functioning decoration," the Hang-It-All began as an object intended for children's rooms, but quickly garnered wider appeal as a coat and accessories rack for use in various areas of one's home. Designs by Ray and Charles Eames are represented in MoMA's collection.
