Monet’s use of color and light is reimagined in the Little People style, with one figure being the artist himself and the other figure a canvas that puts Monet into the vibrant piece of art that he created.
One figure is an interpretive self-portrait of the artist with exaggerated features. The other takes themes from Dalí’s The Persistence of Memory (1931)—a painting in MoMA’s collection—and becomes a figure of art.
MoMA has a history of acquiring toys for the Museum’s collection, from Ernö Rubik’s Rubik’s Cube (1974) to Charles Harrison’s View-master (model G) (1962). A wide array of toys were featured in the 2012 exhibition Century of the Child: Growing by Design, 1900–2000.
Mattel Creations is a brand built at the intersection of art and play. In collaboration with MoMA, this collection reimagines Mattel’s most iconic toys through the lens of world-renowned artworks from the Museum’s collection.
