This iconic 1958 design by Italian lighting pioneer Gino Sarfatti is an ultra-modern take on the midcentury chandelier. Every detail of this distinctive ceiling fixture is exceptional, from the mirror-polish finish of its main steel structure to the way each bulb is fitted with its own horizontal arm. The wiring meanders freely from each bulb to the central trunk, becoming part of the composition. The 2097 Chandelier comes in a medium version (30 E12, 2.7W, 120V included bulbs) and a large version (50 E14, 15W, 120V included bulbs). Suspended over a dining table or as a space-making statement, the constellation of incandescent bulbs is an atmospheric array of indirect light. Installation required. Made in Italy. Both the designer and the manufacturer, Flos, are represented in MoMA’s collection. Designed by Gino Sarfatti for FLOS.

Born in Venice in 1912, Gino Sarfatti studied aeronaval engineering before founding Arteluce, a firm that became synonymous with modern architectural lighting. He designed and produced over 400 fixtures, introducing innovative typology, materials, production techniques, and light sources, including the use of halogen bulbs as early as 1971. His designs have been included in six of the Museum’s exhibitions, from The Modern Movement in Italy: Architecture and Design (1954) to Shaping Modernity 1880-1980 (2013).
