Achille Castiglioni reflects on his statement-making design: “A big chandelier is meant for community areas, lobbies, and rooms that need a lot of light for special occasions and so it also needs to be decorative.” A 1988 update to his 1960 original, this stunning, 60-bulb array has a humble inspiration: A head of dandelion (taraxacum) seeds. The composition of 20 polished aluminum triangles holds 60 clear, incandescent globe bulbs for a bold, brilliant design. Made in Italy. Born in Milan in 1918, Achille Castiglioni is an internationally acknowledged master of Italian design. During his 52-year career, he designed and collaborated on nearly 150 design objects, from lamps to cameras to car seats. His work is known for combining simplicity with fun, along with close attention to how objects are used in real life. In 1997, MoMA launched the first individual retrospective of his work with the exhibition Achille Castiglioni: Design! Prior to that, his designs were featured in numerous exhibitions at the Museum, including The Modern Movement in Italy: Architecture and Design (1954) and Recent Acquisitions: Design (1967-8 and 1970-1). Castiglioni’s work has had a significant impact on the history of the applied arts and has taught generations about good design.
