This handsome design from 1951 exemplifies Nelson’s ability to create objects that achieve a sense of timelessness. This updated version is made of durable powder-coated steel with walnut. George Nelson and the manufacturer, Herman Miller, are represented in MoMA’s collection.
One of the founders of American modernism, George Nelson’s designs were featured at The Museum of Modern Art as early as 1944 in Art in Progress: 15th Anniversary Exhibitions: Design for Use and have been on view at MoMA in over a dozen subsequent exhibitions. Nelson was an industrial designer who served as the Director of Design for the Herman Miller furniture company from 1947 to 1972. His mission was to bring modern design into American homes through a wide array of objects, such as clocks and lamps. Through his design studio, George Nelson Associates, Inc., he designed many of the 20th century’s most noteworthy icons of modernist furniture
