Invite Matisse to your coffee breaks with this mug handcrafted in the USA.

A work from Henri Matisse’s 1940s cut-outs series—the subject of a groundbreaking MoMA exhibition in 2014–2015—has been reproduced on this mug from East Fork Pottery, a company founded by Matisse’s great-grandson Alex Matisse. Crafted from formed and fired stoneware in North Carolina, this mug features the artwork Femmes et singes (Women and Monkeys) in Matisse’s vivid blue. The decals on the mug are produced in France.

Femmes et singes was inspired by Matisse’s vivid memories of the Pacific Isles. The artwork, reproduced in its entirety, curves in a graceful ribbon around the mug. The mug is reduction-fired in large gas kilns and made for everyday use—it’s food-safe, non-toxic and made to last. It can also be used as a decorative objet. Differences in glaze applications on each mug may occur, making each one a unique piece. To prolong the life of your mug, it’s recommended that you hand wash it only, and do not put it in the microwave or oven. The Henri Matisse Femmes et singes Stoneware Mug measures 3h x 4.25"diam. and holds 10oz.

Henri Matisse

Henri Matisse (1869–1954) was a groundbreaking French artist known for his bold use of color and fluid, expressive line. Over his long career as a painter, sculptor, and printmaker, he explored how color and form could work together, from his vibrant Fauvist paintings to his innovative paper cut-outs. Influenced by textiles from his childhood in northern France and his travels, Matisse brought a sense of pattern, harmony, and joy to modern art—though his seemingly simple works were the result of careful, deliberate effort. Over 400 of his works are in MoMA's collection and have been featured in numerous exhibitions at the Museum.
