This set of 12 holiday cards reproduces a 1962 MoMA Holiday Card by Henri Matisse. The image on the card is a reproduction of Matisse’s Virgin and Child on Starry Ground (Vierge et Enfant sur fond étoilé) (1950–51), an artwork in MoMA’s collection. The cards are blank inside with white envelopes. Each card measures 5h x 7"w.
Since the 1940s, MoMA has produced an annual line of holiday cards designed by emerging and established artists, some of whom are featured in the Museum’s collection. The MoMA Holiday Card Program has featured such well-known artists as Robert Indiana, Andy Warhol, and Alexander Calder before they were household names. The selection process, which has changed very little since the early days of the program, begins with an open call for submissions and continues through a thorough evaluation of each design, resulting in an assortment of cards that embody MoMA’s criteria for good design while embracing the spirit of the holiday season.
