MoMA Exclusive: The vibrantly colored design reinterprets Henri Matisse’s Nuit de Noël (1952) as a holiday ornament. For this artwork in MoMA’s collection, Matisse cut out shapes from paper painted in different colors. Then, he arranged them into a pattern. With a stained-glass window maker, he made glass versions of the shapes. The window was ready in time to celebrate Christmas—its name is French for “Christmas Eve.” The Henri Matisse Nuit de Noël Enamel Holiday Ornament measures 3.5”h.
