The Museum has a history of acquiring actual automobiles for their collection. Among them are the inspirations for Hot Wheels: the Jaguar E-Type (widely considered ‘the most beautiful car ever made’) and the Citroën DS23, distinguished by its sweeping curves.
The presentation of Hot Wheels x MoMA collectible die-cast cars is inspired by how the actual cars were showcased in MoMA’s 2021–22 exhibition Automania.
MoMA has a history of acquiring toys for the Museum’s collection, from Ernö Rubik’s Rubik’s Cube (1974) to Charles Harrison’s View-master (model G) (1962). A wide array of toys were featured in the 2012 exhibition Century of the Child: Growing by Design, 1900–2000.
Mattel Creations is a brand built at the intersection of art and play. In collaboration with MoMA, this collection reimagines Mattel’s most iconic toys through the lens of world-renowned artworks from the Museum’s collection.
