MoMA Exclusive: Add brilliant color to your look as you stay cool with this Japanese Handheld Fan. It’s from Nishikawa Shoroku Shoten, a Kyoto-based company that has been designing and producing handheld fans since 1585, Japan’s Azuchi-Momoyama period. The company is part of Japan’s storied history of hand fans: by the 15th century, fans were so widely revered that Japan began exporting them abroad to places like China, where they made their way onto the silk road trade route. By the 18th and 19th centuries, Japanese fans became a desirable fashion accessory among well-heeled European women.

This bold dual-toned fan is produced in colors that are exclusive to our customers. Made from bamboo, cotton and polyester, the Japanese Handheld Fan measures 8.26h x 0.98w x 0.35”d.
