Why We Chose This
Basquiat, whose work is represented in MoMA's collection, painted Bird on Money as a tribute to jazz musician Charlie Parker, who was nicknamed "Bird." Basquiat's work has been featured in numerous MoMA exhibitions, including Club 57: Film, Performance, and Art in the East Village, 1978–1983 (2017–2018) and the highly influential New York/New Wave show at MoMA PS1 in 1981.
