The shape of the Triangle Tote comes from rice bags used on Taiwan’s East Coast during the Japanese colonial period, tracing back to the Japanese Azuma bag. The bag is made by folding a narrow strip of fabric diagonally to maximize the use of the material.
The Triangle Tote is divided into the woven handle and the natural-dyed bag. The weaving comes from the rattan pattern on stone pestle handles. It’s woven from a single rope from start to finish with only one joining point.
The yellow dye is derived from Fukugi bark grown in Hualien and the purple from betel nut core. The dye is constantly stirred in large pots to ensure an even color. During the three cycles of dyeing—boiling, mordanting and drying—the ratio of ferrous and calcium mordants is adjusted.
Founded in 2013 in Taiwan, the name of this brand comes from the Indigenous Pangcah word that translates as “a place to live.” A collaboration between Taiwanese designers and Pangcah people, Kamaro’an produces bags that are handmade by Pangcah craftspeople in the brand’s studio in Hualien, Taiwan.
