MoMA Exclusive: The pattern on this special edition, composite leather Basketball from round21 features details from Haring’s Tokyo Fabric Design (1988), inspired by his time spent in Japan, as well as two panels containing the artist’s signature.

In 1986, artist Keith Haring opened his Pop Shop on Lafayette Street in New York City. (It closed in 2005). After Haring visited Tokyo in 1983 and ‘86, he was inspired to open a second Pop Shop there, in 1987. The space was made out of two metal shipping containers welded together to form one large room. Even though the Tokyo Pop Shop was short-lived (it closed in 1988), it had a significant impact on Japanese pop culture. (And the structure itself was preserved and brought to the U.S.)

The Keith Haring Tokyo Fabric Basketball comes fully inflated and has a premium bladder for lasting air retention. Ball is an official men’s size 7 (29.5" circumference) and weight. Keith Haring’s work is represented in MoMA’s collection. It’s produced by round21, a platform that develops special edition sports-inspired products with renowned artists and athletes.
