A year before he became director of the Bauhaus, architect and designer Mies van der Rohe conceived what is one of the most recognizable furniture pieces of the 20th century. The Barcelona Chair, an object in MoMA’s collection, epitomizes the famous modernist maxim ”less is more”—the ideal of creating something so beautiful, it cannot be further reduced.
Distinguished by exceptional craftsmanship, the Barcelona Chair is upholstered with 40 individual panels of black leather produced from a single cowhide. The panels are cut, hand-welted and hand-tufted with leather buttons. The premium-quality cushions are made from highly resilient urethane foam with down-like dacron polyester fiberfill.
The chair’s polished chrome frame is hand-buffed to a mirror polish, and the 17 leather upholstery straps are attached with aluminum rivets. The Barcelona Chair is built and handmade in Italy to Mies van der Rohe’s exacting standards and measures 30.25h x 29.5w x 30”d with a 17”h seat. Knoll is a manufacturer in MoMA’s collection.
