At once delicate and industrial in its appearance, Harry Bertoia’s famed Side Chair from 1952 is among the most recognized mid-century designs. For the seat and back of the chair, Bertoia welded steel rods into a crosshatch pattern to create a graceful form that seems to float above the design’s wire legs. The seat cushion, made from a weather-proof synthetic called Prairie, adds a contrast of both color and material while providing a comfortable place to sit. The Bertoia Side Chair with Cushion is made for outdoor use and measures 28.75h x 21.75w x 19.75”d with a 17.75”h seat. Both Harry Bertoia and Knoll, the chair’s manufacturer, are represented in MoMA’s collection.
