Why We Chose This
A Champion Hooded Sweatshirt from the 1980s is an object in the Museum's collection and was also featured in MoMA's 2017 exhibition Items: Is Fashion Modern? Champion invented the hooded sweatshirt in the 1930s as something roomy that athletes could wear over their competition gear and to keep them warm before and during training. In the 1950s and '60s, the Champion hoodie became popular among university students.

Champion Archives & MoMA Design Store

Our buying team has been collaborating with Champion, a 100-year-old manufacturer with work in MoMA’s collection, on products since the Museum’s 2017 exhibition Items: Is Fashion Modern? “We visited the Champion archives in order to get a better understanding of the brand’s heritage, as well as capabilities for future products,” says our apparel and accessories buyer Alex. “We were inspired by both the garments themselves—satin bomber jackets, yarn-dyed collars, university cardigans—as well as the approach to graphics that have defined generations of branded apparel. We looked to MoMA’s heritage as a nearly 100-year-old institution to put our spin on these classic designs.”
