Why We Chose This
A Champion Hooded Sweatshirt from the 1980s is an object in the Museum's collection and was also featured in MoMA's 2017 exhibition Items: Is Fashion Modern? Champion invented the hooded sweatshirt in the 1930s as something roomy that athletes could wear over their competition gear and to keep them warm before and during training. In the 1950s and '60s, the Champion hoodie became popular among university students.

“The combination of spending time in Champion's archives seeing all their fantastic designs from the past and visiting their customization facility in Kansas City culminated in the creation of a new capsule collection that pays homage to vintage collegiate designs,” says our Associate Merchandising Director, Chay.

“I have a research fascination with design innovations geared towards women, so I was thrilled to see catalogs from 1970 in which “Lady Champion” was launched,” says Chay. “Designs that had the ‘gymagination’ to position women in active settings.”
