Artful eyewear inspired by patterns in Matisse’s paper collage.

MoMA Exclusive: Frame your face and pay homage to Henri Matisse, an artist who has work in the Museum’s collection. We partnered with Akila and the Henri Matisse Estate to develop these sunglasses which are based on the 1951 MoMA exhibition catalogue Henri Matisse, for which Matisse created paper cut-outs as the design of the book cover. Handmade from eco-conscious, biodegradable acetate and stainless steel, this round-shaped pair has colorful stripes on the inner frames to brighten up any look. (The silhouette is inspired by the shape of the eyeglasses worn by Matisse.) Its arms display Matisse’s signature, the Akila logo and of course, the MoMA logo as the style was created just for us. Each frame comes with a matching microfiber lens cloth and puff pouch. The MoMA Akila Henri Matisse Exhibition Catalogue Sunglasses have a frame that measures 1.69h x 5.25”w with temples that measure 5.71”l.

While the work is composed of simple shapes—Matisse was aware of their "apparent simplicity"—the artist labored exactingly to achieve the "art of balance, of purity and serenity." Henri Matisse (1869–1954) was a groundbreaking French artist known for his bold use of color and fluid, expressive line. Over his long career as a painter, sculptor, and printmaker, he explored how color and form could work together, from his vibrant Fauvist paintings to his innovative paper cut-outs. Influenced by textiles from his childhood in northern France and his travels, Matisse brought a sense of pattern, harmony, and joy to modern art—though his seemingly simple works were the result of careful, deliberate effort. Over 400 of his works are in MoMA's collection and have been featured in numerous exhibitions at the Museum.
