MoMA Exclusive: Bucket hats have existed since the 1900s, as utilitarian headgear, but it wasn’t until the 1970s that the style became a pop-culture icon. Introduced by Kangol, a hat brand founded in 1938, this style of the bucket hat—the Bermuda Casual—was quickly adopted by New York City’s burgeoning hip-hop scene in the 1980s and today it remains a pop-culture classic. This special edition of the iconic bucket hat features the MoMA logo. The MoMA Kangol Bucket Hat is made from 45% modacrylic, 40% acrylic and 15% nylon. A Kangol hat was featured in MoMA’s 2017 exhibition Items: Is Fashion Modern?

Why We Chose This
“The bucket hat’s connotations are as varied as its adopters, in spite of its highly specific design and function,” writes Stephanie Kramer in the catalogue for MoMA’s 2017 exhibition Items: Is Fashion Modern?, which featured a Kangol bucket hat. “The bucket hat has…symbolized a certain subversive nonchalance linked with cultural rebels, such as the writer Hunter S. Thompson in the 1960s, and it has played a prominent role in hip-hop, a uniquely American cultural contribution.”
