In 1974, Richard Danne along with his founding partner Bruce Blackburn of New York design studio Danne & Blackburn, responded to a brief to rebrand NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration). The resulting logo–red, curvy bold type spelling out N-A-S-A with no cross strokes in the A’s–has since retired but remains iconic, educating and inspiring young designers even today. Nicknamed “The Worm,” this futuristic logo as well as the NASA graphic standards manual are both part of MoMA’s collection. In collaboration with creative studio and watchmaker Anicorn, The Space Watch was designed by Danne who explained that “this watch is inspired by Space itself–its beauty, its silence, its rotating planets.”

This timepiece features Miyota 9015 automatic movement, exhibition caseback and planet-inspired spheres as the hour and minute hands. Made in a very limited run of 150 pieces, each watch comes with a NASA patch plus a numbered letterpress print of the logo signed by Richard Danne. The watch comes in a black metal case, which pays tribute to the NASA products of the era—The NASA House Audio Tapes and Film Reels. Danne and Blackburn’s NASA logo graphic standards manual will be on view in Pirouette: Turning Points in Design and is represented in MoMA's collection. The Space Watch has a 42mm case and 12.5mm case thickness. Each watch includes a metal band that measures 7.12l x 0.94”w and a leather strap that measures 7.63l x 0.94”w so you can switch up the look of the watch. Band measurements exclude case and buckle.

Why We Chose This
NASA is represented in MoMA's collection with Danne and Blackburn’s NASA graphic standards manual, along with the famous "worm" logo that they conceived. At the time of its publication in 1976, the manual was considered a futuristic vision for an agency at the cutting edge of science and exploration. When the new logo was approved by NASA administrator Dr. James C. Fletcher, no formal announcement within the company was made. Instead, NASA staff were alerted about the new idenitity with freshly issued stationary, which was sent to every center director, without prior warning that the logo was changing.
