Born in Innsbruck, Austria and educated in Turin, Italy, Ettore Sottsass (1917–2007) was a founder of the 1980s Memphis Design Group. Famous for its postmodern sensibility—described as “a shotgun wedding between Bauhaus and Fisher-Price”—the group favored bold colors and asymmetrical shapes. Sottsass is represented in MoMA's collection by over 20 objects, including the Valentine Portable Typewriter.
