“I grew up traveling the world, but I was forever changed once I took my first trip to Africa in 2005. I was hooked and all I wanted to do was visit a new African country every year. Since then I've only managed to visit five times. Returning home, I knew I wanted to create and highlight the beauty of African textiles in a modern way.”

“We realized that sourcing ankara wax textiles in the quantities we needed was going to be costly and difficult if we relied on importing—so we found local textile wholesalers we could establish our business with. We now work with four African-born, ankara wax wholesalers here in NYC.”

“One of my favorite parts of the process is fabric shopping and the joys of discovering new prints. The fun layers of colors and patterns, along with the whimsical and wild combinations, move and inspire me to create. I don't even know why I'm drawn to certain prints over others. Perhaps it’s a feeling or a connection to something nostalgic, but ultimately I know it when I see it.”

Founded in 2011 by the mother-daughter team of Teta and Maya Gorgoni, Royal Jelly Harlem produces African-inspired home designs. They draw their inspiration from the artistry of printed fabrics, which they have discovered and researched during numerous trips to West and South Africa. They see their brand as contributing to the growth and prosperity of Africa’s rich cultures by purchasing many of their materials from African vendors. Many of their manufacturers are African-born dressmakers and tailors who produce their designs in New York City.
