A collaboration between Seletti, the irreverent Italian design brand, and BIC® Cristal, this statement-making lamp is based on the famous pen, a design represented in MoMA’s collection. This jumbo LED lamp is rendered in a 12:1 scale of the original BIC Pen and is meant to be wall or ceiling mounted. (It is not recommended that this weighty design be leaned against a wall.)

The design mimics the original pen with a clear body, an LED tube light where the ink cylinder would live and the famous matching cap with pocket clip and blue-capped bottom. This playful oversized design fills your space with a bright, welcoming glow, capturing the exact silhouette of the ubiquitous 1950 ballpoint pen. It’s a brilliant reminder of how a nostalgic, everyday object can be transformed into a dramatic piece of modern pop art.

Why We Chose This
Conceived by the Décolletage Plastique Design Team and Marcel Bich in 1950, the BIC Cristal® Ballpoint pen is a humble masterpiece represented in MoMA's collection. The best-selling pen in history, the BIC Cristal was Bich's improved version of László Biró’s early ballpoint pen design from 1938. The first ballpoint pen had issues of clogging and leaking, but Bich’s version uses a 1 mm ball for the pen tip, so that the ink flows more evenly. This simple innovation transformed a once-unreliable technology into a ubiquitous, everyday tool that remains a benchmark of democratic design.
