A chess set reimagined with iconic NYC landmarks.

The Brooklyn Bridge, the Chrysler Building and, of course, a pigeon: This black and white chess set celebrates the 100th anniversary of The New Yorker magazine with pieces fashioned as 3D illustrations of NYC landmarks. The New Yorker Magazine Chess Set is illustrated by Christoph Niemann, a frequent contributor to The New Yorker and an artist with work in MoMA’s collection. Pieces include taxi cabs as pawns, pigeons as knights, the Brooklyn Bridge as rooks, the Statue of Liberty as the queen and more. The New Yorker Magazine Chess Set is made from wood and paperboard. The board measures 2.2h x 13.8w x 13.8”d; the tallest piece, the King, is 3”h.

Why We Chose This
The pieces of this chess set were designed by illustrator Christoph Niemann, acclaimed for his New Yorker covers. His work is represented in MoMA's collection wtih Gun / Espresso (2014), a wry take on the military exercise of assembling a gun while blindfolded. The illustration presents the four steps of this procedure with a surprise ending: the gun parts are transformed into an Italian moka pot coffeemaker. Various chess sets are also represented in MoMA's collection.
