Crush your ingredients authentically with this molcajete, a traditional Mesoamerican mortar and pestle that’s used widely in Mexico. It’s handmade in Mexico from volcanic stone, which is chosen for its porous texture and low hardness, making it easy to carve into various shapes. The volcanic stone comes from the lava inside a volcano that quickly turns to stone when it reaches the cold surface.
Use the Volcanic Stone Mortar & Pestle to grind or crush grains, spices and vegetables to create ingredients for sauces and other dishes such as guacamole. This mortar and pestle requires a cured, or seasoned, preparation and special care. The Volcanic Stone Mortar & Pestle measures 2.75h x 6"diam. and weighs 4.26lbs. Hand wash only with warm water, no soap.
Instructions for seasoning the Volcanic Stone Mortar & Pestle:
- Firmly wash the utensil inside and outside using a brush or sponge with hot water and soap. Allow to dry completely.
- Praise a small ration of raw white rice and coarse salt to create a fine dust. Do it by rotating the utensil onto the base as applying force to the mallet and the walls. Reach all the interior surface so that the pore of the stone is covered and soft surface of the mortar and the mallet.
- Always wash using only hot water and brush. Avoid using soap and detergents. Dry with a paper towel before storage.
