The post-consumer plastic used for the Wasted Chairs is gathered from two main sources: waste generated within Desa Potato Head and materials collected by local waste collectors across Bali. Rather than treating these plastics as secondary inputs, they are carefully selected and sorted before being processed.
The waste materials are crushed, crumbled, heated, and pressed into large, solid plastic sheet panels. “What makes the material compelling is its visual character,” explains the Wasted Chair’s designer, Max Lamb. “Each sheet is entirely unique, with distinctive colors, textures, and patterns shaped by the waste itself.”
The solid sheets are beautifully marbled, freckled and durable, thanks to the variety and nature of the plastic fragments. The sheets are precision-cut and shaped into the flat components that make up the Wasted Chair. Off-cuts from the production of the chairs are used to create small products, such as coasters or napkin rings.
Based in Bali, Indonesia, this circular design initiative responds to discarded materials from its surrounding environment, transforming what was once overlooked into thoughtfully crafted objects for contemporary living. Developed in collaboration with designer Max Lamb, Potato Head’s design team, and skilled local artisans, the project turns waste into high-quality products with purpose, story, and lasting sentimental value.
