These five skate decks reproduce In the Water (2019), an acrylic and charcoal work by leading Japanese artist Yoshitomo Nara, whose work is represented in MoMA's collection. “Big-headed girls” are his signature subject. Known for portraying large, piercing eyes to conjure emotional complexity, Nara opts here to close them, leaving the girl's circumstance uncertain as she wades in water. Is she at peace—or in trouble? A fan of picture books since his childhood, Nara draws upon their ability to activate the imagination with powerful, ambiguous images. He is also influenced by Japan's subculture of comic books, animated films, and video games.

These Yoshitomo Nara Skateboards are produced by The Skateroom, a platform for promoting, selling and producing art on skateboards that supports youth-empowering organizations. Add your own wheels (not included) for a cool, functional skateboard or hang the set on your wall as art (wall mount included). For instructions on how to mount your boards, please click here. Each deck measures 31h x 8w x 0.5"d.
