Bruna created the character of Miffy after telling his one-year-old son stories about a little rabbit they had seen in the dunes earlier that day while on vacation at Egmond aan Zee in northern Holland. Miffy's Dutch name, Nijntje, is a shortening of konijntje, meaning "little rabbit."
