Description
MoMA Exclusive: Mass-produced green glass bottles are reborn as compelling objects, each one unique. Kuiken heats the bottles in his custom-made oven and hand-blows them until the glass expands where the walls are thinner, creating exaggerated and arresting silhouettes. Made in the Netherlands from recycled glass
Why We Chose This
For these striking objects, Dutch designer Klaas Kuiken developed a proprietary technique to expand and shape the glass, pushing the boundaries of the material. The pieces are made from recycled mass-produced bottles that were heated in a special oven, custom-made by the designer. Kuiken heats each bottle up to more than 1,200 degrees Fahrenheit, to a point where the glass is unstable but hasn’t quite melted. He then gently blows into them using a compressor, allowing the air to reshape each bottle. He creates some of the shapes by looping wire around the body of the bottle.
