Los Angeles-based artist and educator Mitchell Syrop explores ideas of advertising, language, and meaning through his work. Known for both embracing and subverting the world of advertising, Syrop's photographs often look like slick ads, but are used as a means to explore and deconstruct the way advertisers construct meaning. Syrop often plays with the conditioned mindset that a caption sheds light on its accompanying image by pairing together imagery and language that are seemingly unrelated. Through this process of creating unexpected, often bewildering connections, the viewer is challenged to find their own meaning behind his work. For this project, Syrop designed a plastic stereoscopic viewer that houses slides with images of nature juxtaposed against the caption, "Natural Selection."
