Our History

Our point of view is informed by MoMA’s historical relationship to design.

In 1932, The Museum of Modern Art established the world's first curatorial department devoted to architecture and design—recognizing design’s important role alongside more traditional mediums like painting and sculpture.

Our Process

Every season, we choose 100s of designs from around the world.

Like the designs in MoMA’s collection, our product assortment is item driven. We carefully select design objects that represent innovations in material, function or production technique.

Absolutely. As an extension of The Museum of Modern Art, authenticity is the foundation of everything we do. We work closely with designers, artists and manufacturers to sell original designs, authorized versions and products we develop ourselves that embody the spirit of the design objects in MoMA’s collection. Some of the items we sell are actual designs represented in the Museum’s collection.

Every product we sell is evaluated and approved by MoMA’s curatorial team—the very same experts responsible for what is on view in TheThe Museum of Modern Art of Modern Art. We look for items that meet our carefully considered "good design" criteria, championing innovation, utility, and everyday delight.

We do. To bring you truly unexpected discoveries, we spend a lot of time collaborating closely with artists, designers, and authorized manufacturers all over the globe. These direct partnerships allow us to support the design community while ensuring every product meets our strict standards before it ever reaches your hands.

Lumio Book Lamp: A striking example of form meeting surprise. When closed, it looks like a minimalist wooden book, but when opened, it unfurls into a sculptural, accordion-style LED lantern that casts a warm glow.

Author Clock: Perfect for the person who "has everything." Instead of standard numbers, this smart clock displays the current time using thousands of rotating literary quotes culled from classic and contemporary books.

Mondri Vase: A De Stijl-inspired design that utilizes three distinct chambers and bold primary color blocks and allows the user to rotate and flip the vase to accommodate different floral arrangement styles.

Skyline Chess Set: This set replaces traditional chess pieces with architectural scale models of iconic NYC buildings, turning a classic board game into a permanent living room centerpiece.

MoMA NY Yankees Cap: One of the store's most legendary items. This exclusive collaboration with New Era pairs the classic, globally recognized MLB New Era 9FORTY silhouette with an embroidered MoMA logo on the side.

Ceramic New York Coffee Cup: An everyday design icon. This permanent piece turns the disposable, blue-and-white Greek "Anthora" paper coffee cup—ubiquitous on New York City streets since 1963—into a durable, heat-retaining ceramic keepsake.

HAY Recycled Plastic Color Crates: A fan favorite for home organization. Designed by Danish design house HAY, these highly functional, ventilated, and collapsible storage crates come in vibrant, modern colorways that transform basic storage into a stylistic choice.

Double Rainbow Maker: Powered entirely by solar energy, this design attaches to a window. When struck by direct sunlight, a small motor activates, spinning genuine Swarovski crystals to splash moving rainbow prisms across the entire room.

Birds in Harmony Mobile: A kinetic sculpture masterpiece. This balancing wire mobile uses lightweight, abstract bird silhouettes that gently pivot and shift with natural room air currents, offering a peaceful focal point for modern spaces.
